Tanzania in East African overlooks the Indian Ocean and lies just south of the Equator. Tanganyika, the African Great Lakes nation, was a former colony, and part of, German East Africa until 1919 when, under the League of Nations, it became a British mandate - independence, from British administration, was gained in 1961.

Dodoma, since 1974 was designated the official capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, however, remains the seat of most government administration, as well as being the largest city and port in the country.

Much of the country is covered by a plateau, where a large number of world-famous ecosystems are found, in particular, the savannah environment with its characteristic flora and fauna, preserved in some of the most beautiful parks and nature reserves, together with amazing landscapes, unrivalled variety of game species and some of the continent’s best safari lodges,
